The Geography of Hair

The winter hair struggle

During this time of year, the freezing weather can be extremely hard on our skin and hair. A lot of my clients complain about dry hair and itchy scalp during the winter months. The reason why we get dry scalp is because of how dry our atmosphere becomes. Here are a few tips to help keep your hair and scalp feeling and looking great!

  1. Wear a hat when you can. Wearing a hat will trap in the heat your head is producing and will keep any moisture and oils on the hair and scalp.
  2. Don’t wash your hair every day. Washing your hair everyday will only remove the natural oils your scalp is producing. The reason why your scalp is producing these oils is because you need them! These oils hydrate your scalp and hair and keeps them both healthy. If you’re shampooing to often your removing to many oils and you body will try to over produce these oils, this can dry out your hair and scalp and over work your body. Try using dry shampoos if you feel like you can not go a few days without shampooing. Dry shampoos will absorb some of your oils without drying out your hair and scalp. Product Recommendation:  UNITE’S 7Seconds Dry Shampoo or Kevin Murphy’s Fresh Hair.
  3. Use a clarifying/detoxify shampoo. Once a week use a clarifying shampoo and this will help remove product build up and pollutants, so your hair and scalp can absorb conditioners, treatments, and your natural oil. Product Recommendation: UNITE’s Weekender Shampoo.
  4. Use a leave in conditioner. After you shampoo and condition your hair use a leave in conditioner, this will add more moisture. Leave in conditioners are applied on towel dried hair, this adds extra moisture, shine, and protection to your hair.  Try UNITE’s 7Seconds Leave In, I love this product because it helps hair tremendously without weighing down your hair.
  5. Try a deep condition your hair weekly. Deep conditioners are intensive treatments that add moisture and protein back into the hair. Since our hair is made up of proteins these treatments will help repair and replenish your hair. There are so many options in treatments so please consult your hairdresser to find the best fit for your hair. The best universal treatment I have found is the Phytopolleine by Phyto, it’s an oil treatment that corrects any unbalance found in the scalp.
  6. Massage your scalp daily! This is very important and vital to a healthy scalp and hair. Massaging helps promote blood circulation to the follicle, the follicle receives its nutrition from the blood, to maintain a healthy scalp give yourself a 5-minute scalp massage when you wake up in the morning.

I hope these tips help promote a healthy head of hair during the harsh months of winter. If you have discovered any tricks to prevent dry hair please share them in the comment section below.

Stay warm out there!
